What is graphic design?

Graphic design is a craft in which professionals create visual content to convey messages. Using visual hierarchy and page layout techniques, designers use images and pictures to meet specific user needs and focus on the logic of displaying elements in interactive designs to optimize the user experience.

Graphic design is an ancient craft that dates back to Egyptian hieroglyphs and cave paintings dating back at least 17,000 years. The term originated in the printing industry in the 1920s. It continues to cover a range of activities including logo creation. Graphic design in this sense is about aesthetic appeal and marketing. Graphic designers engage viewers using images, colors, and typography. However, graphic designers working on user interface (UX) design must justify stylistic choices about, say, image placement and font placement using a human-centered approach. This means you need to focus and try to target specific users as much as possible.

Graphic design is emotional design.

As a graphic designer, you should have a clear understanding of color theory and how important it is to choose the right color scheme. The color choice should reflect not only the organization (for example, blue for banking services) but also the user's expectations (for example, red for alerts, green for ongoing notifications). When designing, consider how elements match the tone (for example, sans serif fonts for excitement or happiness). You also need to design the overall effect and specify how you shape users' emotions. Considering the psychology of the user, it is important to focus on the most important aspects of graphic design, namely.

  • Symmetry and balance Rule of thirds (i.e. how users' eyes recognize a good layout)
  • Pattern typography (covers everything from font choice to heading size)
  • Pattern
  • User perception (related to the use of color, such as red as a warning or, in some Eastern cultures, good luck) signal

You need to make sure that beauty and usability go hand in hand. Your visual content will quickly decide the fate of your design, so make sure you don't overlook the slightest factor that could turn users off.
